Students get into a class two ways: an email invitation (which creates their account) or the class join code (which enrols an account that already exists in your workspace). Most classes use both: invitations first, the code for stragglers.
Inviting by email
On the class page, enter a student’s email address. What happens next depends on whether Loam already knows them:
- Already a student in your workspace: they’re enrolled in the class immediately. Done.
- New email: an invitation is created and emailed, and the invite link is also shown to you directly, so you can paste it into your LMS or a class handout if school mail filters are being school mail filters. The link lets the student set up their account; invitations expire after a while, so re-issue any that go stale.
The join code
Every class has a six-character code, shown on the class page. A student who already has an account in your workspace can enter it and enrol themselves (useful for a second class with the same cohort, or the student who joins in week 5). If a code leaks, regenerate it from the class page; the old code stops working, existing enrolments don’t change. When a code is rejected, here’s why. The commonest cause is an account that lives in a different teacher’s workspace.
What Loam asks of students
A name and a school email. That’s the account. No payment details ever; students never pay on any plan. What the product records while they write, and what it never records, is laid out in what students see, worth sharing with the class, and with parents who ask.
