How Loam works

Make the learning visible. Keep the student private.

Loam is a writing space for assessed work. Students write inside the editor. Teachers can read, comment, replay and verify how the document developed. No camera. No screen recording. No algorithm deciding the outcome.

01Write

The work begins on a blank page.

Students type the assignment inside Loam. Paste is blocked in the writing surface, while ordinary drafting tools and revision remain available. The constraint is simple: the assessed prose has to pass through the act of writing.

A writing space, not a lockdown browser.

02Think

The process becomes part of the work.

Loam records how the document changes: insertions, deletions, pauses, revisions and checkpoints. Session-level process signals help a teacher find the moments worth reading or replaying. They do not profile the student and they never issue a verdict.

Signals direct attention. The teacher makes the judgment.

03Recall

Hand-in includes one last act of learning.

When the assignment requires it, Loam locks and hides the essay before asking for a short summary from memory. The summary is typed through the same paste-guarded evidence flow. A shortcut still has to pass through recall and explanation.

The hand-in step checks understanding without an automated accusation.

Teacher review

Understand the work before you judge it.

The final document stays central. The evidence sits beside it, ready when a claim, an unusual passage or a difficult decision needs a closer look.

    Check the linked evidence chain, server checkpoints and the rebuilt final document.

    Respond and submit

    Give feedback, record the grade and make the decision yourself, with the process beside the final answer.

Privacy boundary

The record stops at the edge of the editor.

Loam witnesses the document, not the student. It does not see another tab, a phone, a face or a room. That is a deliberate limit, not a missing surveillance feature.

Questions teachers ask

Straight answers, with the limits left in.

What if a student retypes AI text from a phone?
Retyping and composing leave different patterns in the session. Loam shows revision behaviour, pauses, bursts and replay segments that may deserve attention. A from-memory hand-in summary can also ask the student to explain the argument after the essay is hidden. These are evidence for the teacher, not an automatic finding of misconduct.
Does Loam decide whether a student used AI?
No. Loam does not issue an authorship verdict or make an academic integrity decision. It gives the teacher a readable record of how the work developed, then leaves the judgment where it belongs.
What does Loam record?
Loam records document changes made inside its editor, related timing, revision events, evidence checkpoints and the submission itself. The technical record is hash-linked and server-countersigned so later changes can be detected.
Does Loam record the screen or use a camera?
No. Loam does not record the student's screen, camera, microphone, face, room or activity in other applications. Work outside the Loam editor is outside the evidence record.
Does Loam build a typing fingerprint of each student?
No. Process signals describe the current writing session. Loam does not build cross-session typing profiles or behavioural biometric identities.

With your permission, Loam uses PostHog EU to understand which public pages help visitors and where they leave. Session replay masks every input and is disabled entirely on the document-verifier page. We do not run PostHog analytics inside the signed-in app.
